For those of you who use the postcards, is your department sending those out via your mail machine and you have that cost built into your fees? Or are you requiring the Applicants to provide postage in the amount of a postcard?



We used to do the postcards but it became too confusing to explain the postage to Applicants, so we went back to mailing letters and the Applicant provides the regular postage stamps. We recently did a fee study and will have to revisit this with our Boards.

Somerville switched from letters to postcards about 6 years ago for ZBA, Planning Board, and Historic Preservation Commission. Less expensive. Highly recommend.

When I worked in Wellesley they were using postcards. I believe Newton does as well. And Brookline recently switched to postcards too. Probably a lot of other communities but those are off the top of my head. I can’t recommend it enough by the way.

I assume it is permissible under MGL.



I’m looking for ways to reduce our admin and mailing costs (and keep permit fees reasonable).
