Please join us next *Tuesday, May 16, 2023, at noon* for a Lunchtime
Conversation session on HB1379/SB858, *“An Act to Promote Yes in My
Backyard” *with lead sponsor Representative Andy Vargas and Executive
Director of Abundant Housing Massachusetts, Jesse Kanson-Benanav.

"An Act to Promote Yes in My Backyard is an omnibus housing reform bill
that will, among other things, set a statewide housing production goal,
require multi-family zoning around public transit and commercial centers,
legalize ADUs as of right statewide, and create a process for the
conversion of vacant commercial land into housing. Its other lead sponsors
are Representative Kevin Honan and Senator Brendan Crighton.

*About Representative Andy Vargas*
State Representative Andy X. Vargas represents the 3rd Essex District
(Haverhill) in the Massachusetts House of Representatives. He serves as the
Vice-Chair of the Economic Development and Emerging Technologies Committee.
He also serves as a member of the following committees: Ways & Means,
Education, Public Health and Redistricting. He is a member of the MA Black
& Latino Caucus. Before joining the state legislature, he served as a city
councilor in Haverhill, where he was the city’s first elected Latino
official.

*About Jesse Kanson-Benanav*
Jesse Kanson-Benanav is the Executive Director of Abundant Housing MA, a
statewide network and coalition of pro-housing advocates who stand up for
abundant housing in all communities across Massachusetts. Jesse has over 15
years of experience in affordable housing, public policy, and community
engagement. He is the founder of A Better Cambridge (ABC,) a
community-based education and advocacy group committed to creating more
affordable and sustainable housing. In 2016, he was recognized by the
Boston Globe Magazine as a “game changer” for his work with ABC and was the
recipient of the Metro Housing’s Champions of Housing Rising Star Award in
2019. Before joining AHMA, he was a senior project manager at B’nai B’rith
Housing New England.
