National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Program Intern (Hybrid/Remote Eligible):

The MassDEP Boston NPDES and Residuals group is looking for an intern to assist in reviewing Per-and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) data.  This data is submitted by wastewater treatment facilities and facilities with an Approval of Suitability for land application of residuals.  The intern will work alongside other DEP staff reviewing submitted PFAS data and attend weekly team meetings.  The intern will learn about PFAS sampling methods and testing requirements for wastewater and sludge.  As data is submitted to MassDEP, the intern will review incoming data to either accept the submittal, reject the submittal, and/or follow up with questions about the submittal based upon the quality assurance procedures of the Program   The intern will also participate in compiling annual report data for facilities with an Approval of Suitability for land application of residuals.

  *
Assess submitted PFAS data by looking at trends and reading lab reports.
  *
Follow up with the lab or facility with any necessary questions or corrections.
  *
Learn best practices for sampling and testing for PFAS according to EPA laboratory analytical method 1633.
  *
Develop and refine resources for wastewater facilities regarding PFAS sampling and permit testing requirements for PFAS.
  *
Compile annual report data for facilities with an Approval of Suitability for land application of residuals, including conducting follow-up as needed.

 Preferred Qualifications

  *
Coursework in chemistry, environmental science, or a related field.
  *
Experience with chemistry lab work, through courses or other lab experience.
  *
Ability to understand and apply the regulations, policies, and procedures governing assigned activities.
  *
Highly motivated individual with good attention to detail.
  *
Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite software.
