Community & Economic Development Director
Are you passionate about making an impact? Having just completed its Master
Plan, the Town of Bridgewater is seeking a Community and Economic
Development Director who will play a far-reaching role in shaping the
implementation of the vision that the community has for itself. You will
manage the strategic direction of our Town Council and Town Manager as it
relates to economic development and lead a small but dynamic planning team
committed to delivering results.

Serving under the general direction of the Town Manager’s office, the
Community & Economic Development Director is responsible for providing
overall management of the Community & Economic Development Office and its
initiatives including oversight of community development programs,
planning, grant-writing, permitting and economic development functions.
The Director will lead economic development initiatives to achieve the
goals and objectives outlined by the Town Manager and will be guided by the
policy of the Town Council and the Town’s Master Plan. The Director will
aid in the development of short and long term economic and community
development plans, as well as the gathering of information and preparation
of studies, reports, and recommendations to achieve such goals. This may
involve the preparation and maintenance of information on utilities, taxes,
zoning, transportation, community services, financing tools, and
incentives, to respond to requests for information for economic development
purposes, and the coordination with other departments and agencies as
needed.
The Director will provide professional economic development advice, assist
in the application and permitting process, and serve as an advocate for
economic development in line with the Master Plan, zoning ordinances, and
goals as established by the Town. The position will:
- Work closely with the business associations and individual business
owners to promote business expansion and development within the Town;
- Maintain a liaison with various local, State, and Federal agencies,
including Bridgewater State University;
- Coordinate projects with appropriate agencies as deemed necessary and
appropriate, such as HUD, Executive Office of Housing and Economic
Development, Old Colony Planning Council, the Department of Housing and
Community Development (DHCD), and Mass DOT;
- Provide information and/or make presentations to supervisors, boards,
commissions, civic groups, businesses, individuals, and the public on
economic development issues, programs, services, and plans.
- Be fully aware of existing inventory of available buildings and
business and residential development sites within the community. This will
include both public and private buildings and land areas.
- Prepare grant proposals and applications, contracts and other
necessary documents as may be required for necessary community services.
- Work with internal stakeholders and strategic partners to formulate
and implement marketing and business attraction strategies.
- Serve as a member of economic development groups or task forces that
promote economic and community development at the local, State or Federal
level, as deemed necessary or appropriate.
- Monitor legislation and regulations relating to economic development,
and report findings to the appropriate impacted parties, i.e., the Town
Manager, the Community & Economic Development Committee, the Town Council,
etc.
- Maintain strong working relationships with the public, area
businesses, clients, the media, and others.
- Serve as a member of various staff committees, as assigned.
- Attend professional development workshops and conferences to keep
abreast of trends and developments in the field of community and economic
development, and to represent the interest of the Town of Bridgewater on
matters related to community and economic development.
- Collaborate with other Town staff and conduct other related work as
assigned.
Considerable experience in economic and community development, including
administrative responsibility; graduation from a four-year college or
university, preferably with specialization in economic and community
development, urban planning, public administration, public policy or a
related field; or any equivalent combination or experience and training.
Considerable knowledge of business development, community development, and
economic development. Working knowledge of municipal zoning and
infrastructure, and planning programs and processes. Demonstrated ability
to communicate effectively to groups and individuals, engineers,
architects, contractors, developers, businesses, supervisors, employees,
and the public. Ability to establish positive working relationships with
other organizations and economic development practitioners.
This exempt position offers a competitive benefit package and is classified
at Grade 13 in the Town's compensation schedule with a salary range of
$86,264.52 - $113,186.70 (40 hrs/per week). The Town is prepared to offer
compensation within the stated salary range commensurate with a candidate's
qualifications and experience. Salary requirement must be included with
