Greetings!

The APA-MA Housing & Community Development Committee is offering another great “Lunchtime Conversation” meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 18 at noon. This month and for the next few months, we’re turning our attention to community development challenges that touch on but are not limited to housing. Our January 2022 topic: the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) and Section 504. As many of you know, these federal laws require municipalities to conduct a self-evaluation and develop a transition plan. We will discuss the importance of ensuring that people with disabilities can fully participate in municipal life and we will review the process of conducting a self-evaluation and developing a transition plan. Special attention will be paid to accessibility assessments and planning for outdoor spaces – a topic that may be helpful to many of you that are updating or soon will be updating your Open Space and Recreation Plan. There will plenty of time for your questions.

Speakers
Our guest speaker, Kathy Gips, provides ADA training regionally and nationally. Kathy has expertise in all titles of the ADA, Sections 501, 504 and 508 of the Rehabilitation Act, the Massachusetts Architectural Access Board regulations, the federal Fair Housing Act, and related state disability rights laws. In addition to in-person trainings she develops ADA guidance material and web courses. At the Massachusetts Office on Disability, Kathy was assistant director for community service where she worked with municipalities on ADA compliance.

Kathy will be introduced by Melissa Pond, a member of the APA-MA HCD Committee. Melissa is senior planner with the City of Quincy Department of Community Development. She worked on the City of Quincy’s first ADA Self Evaluation and Transition Plan in 2020, completed the ADA Coordinator Training Certification Program in 2021, and continues to work on implementing the Transition Plan with the Commission on Disabilities and others. Melissa will participate in the presentation and assist during Q&A.
