Jeff and Carolyn,

Northampton is a great example of a city using several zoning tools to allow for more housing. Eliminating single-family zoning citywide is very impressive! The same feat as Minneapolis without the national headlines.

Attached are sources on upzoning and other measures to allow more housing. Not all are examples of cities and towns using these tools (some are more context pieces) but still food for thought.

Best,
Christine

Jeff,
Northampton has made several changes to its zoning based upon objectives and directives in our Sustainability Plan. The most recent changes included eliminating single-family only zoning throughout the City. We also created more flexibility to create multiple small detached structures on a single lot, created flexibility to have a combination of unit types on a single lot and reduced frontage, lot size, open space and parking requirements.

What are some examples of towns that have increased allowed density to allow for more housing and more housing types? Preferably of their own volition, more or less, not in response to any state mandates like 40B or 3A.

Thanks,
