Re-upping this one last time in case folks are interested in participating. I know a lot of communities participated in the Shared Streets and Spaces program.

Subject: Request for Information on COVID-Related Changes to Street Space

Hello Massachusetts Transportation Professionals and Local Leaders,

My name is Luke Morin. I am a graduate research assistant at UNC-Chapel Hill in the Department of City and Regional Planning. I’m working with Dr. Tabitha Combs on a study on the rapid rollout of new supports for active transportation and outdoor commerce that occurred at the onset of COVID-19. In this study, Policy Supports for COVID-Streets, we are seeking information about the local and state factors that facilitated or hindered such projects. Our goal is identify replicable policies and programs that enabled rapid, effective transportation-based responses to the pandemic. It is our hope that our findings will aid communities across the US in preparing for future disruptions to demand for transportation and public street space.

We have identified Massachusetts as a state where numerous communities implemented one or more changes to street space during the pandemic, and we would like to learn more from you about how these changes occurred. At the bottom of this email is a link to a short survey designed to help us gather background information about these changes. We would be grateful for your assistance in filling out this survey. We estimate the survey will take approximately ten minutes to complete.

Depending on your survey responses and your willingness to further assist with this research, I may reach out to schedule a 45-minute interview to discuss these topics in more detail. As a small token of our appreciation for your participation in this interview, we will send a $10 gift card to either Starbucks or Target, if you are able to accept it.

Please feel free to respond directly to this email with any questions.
